Overview

Canton is one of Baltimore's most sought-after urban neighborhoods: a tight grid of Federal-style rowhouses steps from the Inner Harbor, with the square, dog-friendly parks, and the restaurants and bars along O'Donnell Street all within a few blocks.

Waterfront park, O'Donnell Square, and the harbor promenade within a few blocks.

Living in Canton

Canton takes its name from the plantation of merchant John O'Donnell, who settled in Baltimore in 1785 and named his land after the Chinese port of Canton. After 1828 the Canton Company sold off and developed the land for waterfront industry and worker housing, and that history still shapes the street grid today. The neighborhood runs from Patterson Park and Eastern Avenue on the north to the water on the south, between Chester Street and Conkling Street, with Boston Street curving along the shoreline.

Most of the housing is two- and three-story brick rowhouses built around the turn of the 20th century, and some homes near the waterfront date to the Civil War era. Since the 1980s, new housing and marinas have replaced much of the waterfront industry: newer townhouses stand at O'Donnell Square and elsewhere, and former industrial buildings along the water now hold apartments and condos. The rehabilitated American Can Company building is another local landmark.

O'Donnell Square, a small park bordered by O'Donnell Street, South Potomac Street, and Linwood Avenue, is the traditional center of the neighborhood, lined with restaurants, bars, and shops and home to an Enoch Pratt Free Library branch. On the water, Canton Waterfront Park was dedicated in 1990 on a former rail yard and cargo pier, together with the Maryland Korean War Memorial. Patterson Park sits right on Canton's northern edge, and Professor Trash Wheel has been moored off Boston Street Pier Park since 2016.

For getting around, Canton Waterfront Park is a stop on Baltimore's free Harbor Connector water taxi, which links Canton with Locust Point and Fells Point. Boston Street and Eastern Avenue are the main surface routes toward downtown, and Interstates 95 and 895 run close by.

Buyers in Canton often ask about Baltimore City's Homeownership Incentives Program, run by the city's Department of Housing and Community Development, which includes the First-Time Homebuyers Incentive, Live Near Your Work, and Buying Into Baltimore, along with the statewide Maryland Mortgage Program. Terms and availability change, so see our Maryland programs page before you budget around any of them.

One practical note: much of Canton is in the Canton Historic District on the National Register, but Canton is not one of Baltimore City's CHAP local historic districts, so it does not carry the CHAP exterior review that applies in places like Federal Hill and Fells Point. It is still worth confirming any specific address before planning exterior changes.
